In effort to reclaim the narrative of his protest, Colin Kaepernick takes on the cover of GQ Magazine as Citizen of the Year.

Whether you’re a Football fan or not, chances are you know of the yearlong battle between the American justice system, Colin Kaepernick, and the NFL.

In August of 2016, Kaepernick was the star quarterback of the San Francisco 49ers that became known as the Football player that sat during the national anthem. When asked by the press as to why he failed to acknowledge the national anthem, Kaepernick told, “I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color.”

Since then, the sports world has blown up in disagreement as other athletes began to slowly show support towards Kaepernick by kneeling as well or raising a fist during the national anthem. Everyone from professional athletes, international athletes, high school athletes, college cheerleaders, marching bands, and even national anthem performers, have followed in Kaepernick’s footsteps proving that he had truly started a civil rights movement.

However, Kaepernick’s fearlessness to do the right thing has caused him to be locked out of playing professional Football even though his stats show that he is one of the best quarterbacks around.

The war against Kaepernick fired up again when President Trump called out Kaepernick at an Alabama rally saying, “Wouldn’t you love to see one of these NFL owners, when somebody disrespects our flag to say, get that son of a bitch off the field right now, he’s fired. He’s fired!”

Of course this mobilized the impressionable Trump train and changed the entire narrative of Kaepernick’s protest. Trump insisted that this civil rights movement is disrespectful to the U.S. flag and military which was not Kaepernick’s intention — at all.

Yet even with all the hate and the misunderstanding, Kaepernick came out on top as a majority of NFL players showed their support by kneeling, locking arms, and raising fists, the following game day after Trump’s harsh remarks.

Rather than adding more fuel to the fire, Kaepernick decided to let others close to him speak on his behalf. With a united spectrum that discusses the backlash, Kaepernick’s message and how to fight the systematic oppression directed towards black Americans, you can expect to gain ethereal wisdom from Ava DuVernay, J. Cole, Ameer Hasan Loggins, Eric Reid, Nessa, Harry Belafonte, and more. Simply put, this feature is an absolute must read.
